Rainbow Dace
For the first time this season, we have Rainbow Dace available.
Also known as the Red Shiner or Red-horse Minnow, Rainbow Dace are native to central North America west of the Mississippi River.
Maximum size is only about 3.5 inches, but they pack plenty of color to make up for it. With a mix of blue and purple on the sides combined with red fins, these fish are sure to delight.
Dace are winter hardy, and completely compatible with all Koi and Goldfish. For more information and pricing, check out the Rainbow Dace product page or our Price List and Availability.
DO THESE DACE EAT GOLDFISH FLAKES?
No, I do not believe Dace eat Goldfish flakes.
hi do they eat pellets or anything if so please respond, thanks tim
Hi Tim,
Yes, the Rainbow Dace will eat the same pellet food given to Koi and Goldfish. The smallest pellet size is preferable.
Yay I’ve wanted a rainbow dace for ever, could I please have address to come buy some 🙂
What do you feed ther fry ?
What’s the best food to feed ther fry thanks bobby .
There is specially formulated koi and goldfish food widely available on the market. Thanks.
And my koi are bulling rainbow dace any advice
No, sorry, there is not much to be done to stop large koi from bullying small Rainbow Dace.
Hi Casey, is there a date too late to introduce these fish to an outdoor pond (Maryland, Zone 7) for overwintering? We have had a couple of 33/34 degree nights, with a 32 or below night probably within the month.
Hi David,
Dace are winter hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. So, provided that they are acclimate properly, I would not think that you would have a problem adding them to your pond. Good luck!
Do you have to worry about large koi or pleco eating these
Pleco, no, they will not eat Rainbow Dace. However large koi will eat them if they are able to get the dace into their mouth.
Winter hardy, but can they survive under ice? Located in northern Wisconsin; Goldfish have been fine.
Sorry, I’m not sure about their ability to survive under ice.
can they live in a heated aquarium at 24 degrees centigrade ? as can white cloud mountain minnows, goldfish and palaty variatus.
can rainbow dace live in a heated aquarium as can other subtropicals such as goldfish, white cloud mountain monnows and platy variatus ?
Yes, Rainbow Dace can live in a heated aquarium that is suitable for subtropicals.
Wow a lot of stupid questions here. Do some research people……. Gosh!!!
Here’s a good question that i have not found while researching smart guy mr. anonymous. Do these need to breed using clams, or mussels, as do some, or over a rock pile? There seems to be varying opinions on this. How do you accomplish breeding with these?
Are Rainbow Dace easy to breed? Can’t seem to find much information on that subject. Can you provide ay links as to where I could find breeding information?
Thank in advance.
I was thinking about getting some cold water fish and the rainbow dace looked really pretty. What is their approximate price?
The dace might look pretty if you have an underwater window in your pond, but in mine you’re usually looking down on them so they look brown and camouflaged. Still, better than the unnatural dayglow orange of koi.
Do you have rainbow dace for sale this spring?
No, sorry, we are not carrying Rainbow Dace this year.
I would like to get a fish similar to the face for my koi pond. Any suggestions? Minnows maybe
Do you plan to get rainbow shiners this year or next?
No, we are no longer carrying Rainbow Dace.
